The kitchen sink stands as one of the highest traffic zones in the home, particularly during the whirlwind of meal preparation and cleanup. While gathering with loved ones brings joy and creates lasting memories, the aftermath often leaves behind a considerable mess that demands attention. Understanding how to design and optimize this critical workspace transforms the post-entertaining cleanup from a dreaded chore into a comfortable, streamlined process.

Understanding Kitchen Work Zones
The classic kitchen work triangle has long served as a fundamental guideline for kitchen design, connecting the sink, stove, and refrigerator in an efficient pathway. However, as today’s kitchens continue to grow in size and open up into connecting rooms, this concept has naturally evolved to include separate functioning work zones—distinct areas designed for specific tasks that work together to create an efficient and organized workspace.
See how this kitchen work triangle in this kitchen moves traffic from the paneled fridge, to the sink, to the cooktop, yet each area has a large amount of storage and space for each task.

The three primary kitchen work zones include the Prep Zone, Cooking Zone, and our topic of today, the Clean-Up Zone! These essential areas form the backbone of kitchen functionality, each serving a crucial role in the overall meal-creating process. In addition to these foundational zones, it’s common for kitchen designs to incorporate specialty work zones tailored to specific household needs. These might include a baking center zone for the avid baker; a command center zone to manage household schedules and paperwork; a beverage station dedicated to crafting coffee and drinks, or even a dedicated area for pets complete with food storage and feeding stations. The size and layout of the kitchen ultimately determines which specialty zones can be incorporated alongside the primary work areas.
What is the Clean-Up Zone?
The kitchen Clean-up Zone generally consists of an area that includes a sink, dishwasher, and recycling/wastes station that has a different function from the Prep and Cook Zones and is often where items that were used during the cooking process are cleaned. Many times, these work zones will overlap.

Mastering the Clean-Up Zone Design
When designing your new kitchen, the Clean-up Work Zone should be centered around the kitchen’s primary sink. While the size and shape of the actual sink may vary, a deep sink is ideal for both washing large items and for hiding dirty ones from guests until they can be washed. In addition, ample countertop space should be provided on both sides of the sink.
Include Landing Zone Space Around the Kitchen Sink
Countertop space surrounding the sink demands careful consideration to ensure the space if both functional and comfortable to work in. Plan for at least a 24″ sink landing area on at least one side and a minimum of 18″ on the other. This provides ample countertop space to be utilized as a landing area for dirty dishes, drying dishes, or other items while hand-washing or loading the dishwasher.
Plan Nearby Waste & Recycling
Positioning trash, compost, and recycling bins within easy reach of the Clean-Up Zone enhances efficiency dramatically. Nearby placement allows for easier access when scraping off any remaining food or waste into the waste or compost bin before washing or loading the dishwasher.

Optimal Dishwasher Placement
If your kitchen has a dishwasher, it is recommended that it be located within 36″ of the sink. Ideally, the dishwasher will be located adjacent to the sink for easier hookups to plumbing and close proximity to the primary sink.

The age-old question of dishwasher placement—left or right of the sink—lacks a definitive answer. This decision ultimately rests on personal preference and the specific layout constraints of the space. In many cases, the exact positioning of the kitchen sink and available adjacent space naturally determines the dishwasher’s location, making the choice for the homeowner.

Accessible Dish & Glassware Storage
As you’re considering the quick distance from the sink to the dishwasher, you should also consider the distance from the dishwasher and sink to the final storage location of the dishware and glassware.
You’ll want to decide if you want your everyday items displayed on an open shelf near the sink to encourage habits of washing and putting away immediately after each use. This option also creates an easy access and inviting display for you and your guests to grab a dish when needed.
Or do you prefer a tidy, organized drawer for your collection of plates and dishes? A drawer is a great option for household members of all ages and most restrictions. Placed in the top or middle drawer, makes the collection easy to access and put away. Containers can also be stored in a similar mannor in the drawer below.
Dura Supreme’s Plate Rack combined with the Dish Storage Drawer creates a convenient spot to neatly store and organize an entire set of dishware.
Is there an easy-to-reach wall cabinet nearby? If the wall cabinet is the only place to put the dishware, but a stretch for the vertically challenged family members (like myself), consider adding a Pull-Out Step Stool cabinet near by to make the reach easier.

Keep your step stool within reach but out of sight with our Step Stool Pull-Out. This clever storage solution features a 3/4″ panel that glides out to reveal a mounted step stool, which you can position on either side of the cabinet. The included 14″ step stool locks securely in place when in the open position, ensuring safe and easy access whenever you need a boost.
Storage Solutions That Enhance the Clean-Up Zone
Of course, no Clean-Up work zone would be complete without adequate storage for commonly used items, such as cleaning supplies, garbage, and recycling bins, dish towels, etc. Let’s explore some innovative examples of how you can create a functional and well-organized Clean-up Zone with kitchen storage solutions from Dura Supreme that’ll leave your kitchen in tip-top shape.

Pull-Out Recycling and Waste Centers
As I mentioned earlier, positioning the waste and recycling bins within a close distance to the sink streamlines the cleanup process, providing immediate access for scraping dishes and disposing of food waste without tracking mess across the kitchen.
Our Base Recycling Centers rank among the most popular kitchen storage solutions, not only because they’re a common must-have for the modern-day kitchen but for several additional compelling reasons.
Hands-Free Waste Bin Innovation
At Dura Supreme, these pull-out cabinets come standard with our touch-latch mechanism (with soft-close). With a nudge from the knee or a tap of the fingertips, the BRC will automatically open. This new design recognizes that this cabinet is one of the most used and abused cabinets in the kitchen. By adding this hands-free option, it provides a safe way to open the cabinet when your hands are dirty, full, or wet. Less exposure to water and messes will help prolong the life of the cabinet and decrease everyday wear and tear.
Dura Supreme cabinetry also offers an enhanced hands-free option with our Servo-Drive upgrade. Our servo-drive option uses a powered push that extends the cabinet fully open with a slight push of the knee or tap of the hand.
Built-In Protection: Metal Drip Edge
Our Base Recycling Bins take protection one step further with our Metal Drip Edge, a standard feature on all Dura Supreme waste bin pull-out cabinets. As one of the most frequently used and abused cabinets in the kitchen, the waste bin cabinet naturally encounters constant drips, spills, and moisture exposure. Over time, this high-traffic zone takes a toll—the top edge of the cabinet door becomes scratched and worn from regular scrubbing and cleaning.
Our Metal Drip Edge solves this challenge elegantly. This thoughtful addition shields the door’s top edge from spills and moisture damage while making cleanup effortless. No more worrying about damaging your beautiful cabinetry during routine maintenance. Available in three sophisticated finishes—Black, Brushed Aluminum, or Satin Brass—the Metal Drip Edge seamlessly coordinates with your kitchen’s design aesthetic while providing lasting durability where you need it most.

Keep ‘Doing the Dishes’ Clean & Organized
Sometimes the supplies we need for doing the dishes can clutter the space around the sink.
Decrease Clutter Around the Kitchen Sink
Are you looking for a solution to hide all the small clutter around the kitchen sink? Our Tip-Down Sink Tray (TDFS) neatly conceals scrub brushes and dish scrapers when not in use, maintaining a clean, uncluttered appearance around the sink area. This discreet storage solution keeps essential tools within immediate reach while preserving the kitchen’s aesthetic appeal—a perfect example of marrying form with function
Hidden Kitchen Towel Storage
Does your kitchen towel become the center of attention near your kitchen sink? Consider incorporating a slim pull-out cabinet adjacent to the sink designed to conceal your kitchen towel with an integrated towel bar (BPOF-TB or BPOC-TB). This innovative design allows dish towels to dry naturally after use while maximizing the utility of otherwise wasted narrow spaces. The top shelf accommodates spare sponges and brushes, while the bottom shelf provides dedicated storage for dish soaps and cleaning supplies, creating a comprehensive organizational system in minimal square footage.
